Abuse

Adult Protective Services, is organized to protect the elderly and the disabled adult from abuse, neglect and exploitation. Below you will find an overview of these forms of abuse, along with local office information.

Abuse: Causing or attempting to cause physical harm or placing an elderly or disabled adult in fear of imminent physical harm.

Neglect: failure by a caretaker to provide habilitation, care, clothing, shelter, nutrition and medical care; failure by an adult to provide these for him/herself.

Exploitation: unjust or improper use of an elderly or disabled adults assets and resources

Elder: a person who is 65 years of age or older

Disabled adult: a person who is 18 years of age or older who is impaired because of mental illness, mental deficiency, physical illness or disability to the extent that he/she is unable to care for his/her own personal safety and provide necessities such as food, shelter, clothing or medical care.
